• ✓ During my 3 years of postgraduate training in gastroenterology, I was fortunate to have worked under inspirational teachers. Dr. Prabha Sawant is one of the most prominent names in gastroenterology from India. She is past president of Indian Society of Gastroenterology Maharashtra, and has been head of department of GI services at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College for past 25 years.
• ✓ Our GI unit had 4 postgraduate trainees who attend to 30 – 35 indoor patients. We also catered to an OPD of 100-150 patients on opd days. My duties included patient management and decision-making in the elective and acute setting, training of postgraduate students and administrative duties in the ward.
• ✓ In addition to our patient services, we had weekly interactive teaching sessions as a part of our postgraduate training. These include GI pathology, GI radiology, Journal club, bedside clinical case presentation and clinical meetings in which all faculties actively participate. I also participated in clinical research during my GI training. After an initial period of guidance we were encouraged to perform endoscopies independently.
